Float
beneath quaint bridges that span stretches of tree-lined banks as you
navigate on Chartiers Creek toward the Ohio River. Churn your way through exciting
rapids below Canonsburg one moment, then round the bend to discover an
immense great blue heron rookery nested across 5 large sycamores. |
|
Stop
off and explore Allegheny Land
Trust's Wingfield Pines Conservation Area and Upper St. Clair's
Mayview Wetlands. Indulge in a journey of contrasts as primordial wilderness
snakes through an urban setting. Spring wildflowers splash steeply
forested hillsides while towns perch on creek banks overhead. |
 |
|
The
spring sojourn sponsored by POWR takes place in May or June.
Canoes
and kayaks are put in the creek in Canonsburg with take out traditionally 12 miles downstream at Chartiers Park in
Bridgeville, although ALT's Wingfield Pines is an optional take out &
camp out site.
After
an optional overnight camp out complete with a hearty meal, entertainment and
bonfire, the next morning the canoes are put in at
the Chem Tech building off Washington Pike in Collier Township to float the next 12 miles downstream to McKees Rocks.
Optional take-out at the Sharp Edge Creekhouse in Crafton for thin crust
pizza and their amazing assortment of micro-brewed beer.

Experience the
journey as an early explorer may have, as the evening program highlights
the region's history. Past participants have been serenaded by banjo and
fiddle as modern musicians have delved into the archaic roots of
bluegrass. |
|
Be regaled by stories of colonists and Native Americans, as told
by local historians in authentic dress or cap the evening entertainment with an encore performance by the spring
peeper frogs chirping from nearby wetlands, as you toast yourself by the
roaring campfire. |

The
Scott Conservancy is an American
Canoe Association (ACA) affiliate. We
filled our scrapbook with the photos of 74 eager participants that
went on this trip, posted to our Canoe
Sojourn Bulletin Board.
Due
to the event's growing popularity & the increasing cost of insurance,
Scott Conservancy regrets that our small group does not have enough
volunteers to host this year's event. However, many shorter
impromptu excursions down the creek are organized throughout the spring
& summer - even fall & winter - by local enthusiasts:

You'll
ride by quaint towns and scenic bridges as Robinson Run, a tributary of
Chartiers Creek, snakes along the Panhandle Trail. A trail
feasibility study has identified a potential new route through Scott
Township and adjacent municipalities (map) that could eventually link up
with the Panhandle Trail to increase the region's hiking and biking
opportunities. |
