Spring Cleanups

The Great PA Cleanup

Earth Day is always a good time to stage a cleanup.  And in Scott Township we always have a lot to clean up.  The conservancy is restoring our Kane Woods property, so we can use a hand for clearing debris and picking up trash.

With a $5,000 grant from the PA Dept of Community & Economic Development to help restore our land, the Kane Woods is becoming even more attractive for public use.

So, besides picking up trash, the annual spring cleanup is always an opportunity to do some much needed trail care and maintenance.

Your older children and your teenagers especially can learn the importance of their outdoor environment this Earth Day. Younger children may be brought to the conservancy cleanup, but they MUST be supervised closely by a parent willing to take steps to ensure their safety and limit their participation.

This spring, join your fellow conservancy members, community volunteers and other Pennsylvanians across the state for the Great PA Clean-up

Last spring,  Scott Township, for the first time ever, joined the conservancy in cleaning up, by sponsoring a township wide clean-up of various roadways.  We would really like their participation to become an annual event.

The ubiquitous tire

On Earth Day weekend, Scott Conservancy will again clean up the Kane Woods Nature Area. Meet at the Whiskey Point Trailhead,  and park in our lot on the corner of Main Street and Scrubgrass Road across the street from the Veterans Bridge.

Bring tools such as shovels, rakes, pickaxes, wheelbarrows, saws, loppers and hand clippers. Wear long sleeved shirts, long pants, and sturdy shoes. If possible, volunteers can bring a bucket for the collection of sharp objects.

This is a unique opportunity to make a real difference in your very own neighborhood.

Gloves, trash bags, safety vests, and water will be provided.

The Kane Woods

The Kane Woods

The Scott Conservancy has taken down structures and is developing hiking trails on our 44 acre  property, the largest area of greenspace left in Scott Township.

The land is around the perimeter of the old Kane Hospital Buildings.  It forms a circle around the hill where the hospital used to be, making this an ideal area for trails.

We need volunteers to blaze, mark and maintain trails and to help us clean up the property.  Please check our calendar for times or contact Jane Sorcan  or Don McGuirk.

The flower beds at the Greentree and Cochran Road Traffic Circle are highly visible to the thousands of motorists traveling this very busy intersection each day.

What a great way to highlight the efforts of the Scott Conservancy.  Such a visible statement promotes  environmental awareness!

We need your volunteer help to keep those flower beds weeded, mulched and looking beautiful.

It takes a lot of work, so many hands are needed to make light work in the spirit of true group effort.  Please help us preserve this community asset.  Stop by on one of the scheduled planting or weeding days and give us a hand.

Feel the sense of accomplishment
as you drive by and see the visible result of YOUR handiwork!

Scrubgrass AMD Treatment Site

Although the Scrubgrass Run Abandoned Mine Drainage Project was conceived and constructed by engineering professionals, the Scott Conservancy would also like to thank the volunteers who donated their time to this project, for those who help spread the word about our efforts to reduce the abandoned mine drainage problem, and those who educate the public by leading hikes through our facilities.

Buy our T-shirt dyed with the retrieved orange iron precipitate that has been recycled into  pigment !!!   By the way, that orange iron pigment also works great in cement to give a warm orange color to those boring grey sidewalks, walls and steps!!  Use it to color the mortar between flagstones or bricks to enhance the look.
